Jim Winges Bio

Jim Winges, Ph.D., CC-AASP was raised in rural Minnesota.  As a child he gravitated toward sport.  Jim has participated in competitive football, baseball, basketball, hockey and wrestling.  He attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth, earning undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Exercise Science while minoring in Coaching Football and Ice Hockey.  As part of his Coaching minor Jim was an Assistant Football Coach at 5A Duluth East High School where he coached linebackers and defensive lineman.  Jim also officiated ice hockey at UMD. 

Jim began his graduate education at Arizona State University where he completed his Masters in Kinesiology specializing in Sport Psychology under the mentorship of Darren Treasure, Ph.D.  While in Arizona, Jim founded ISPC and began consulting athletes to improve their mental training.  After completing his Masters, Jim continued consulting and worked for the Arizona Interscholastic Association Academy.  At the Academy he presented seminars on coach and parent education for youth sport while coordinating the coach and parent education program.

In 2008, Jim became an Association for Applied Sport Psychology Certified Consultant under the mentorship of Aynsley Smith, Ph.D.  This certification is the gold standard for mental training and performance enhancement consulting.  There are currently approximately 360 certified consultants in the world today.  Jim is also a member of the United States Olympic Committee Sport Psychology and Mental Training Registry. 

In 2012, Jim completed his Doctorate specializing in Sport Psychology at the University of Minnesota under the mentorship of Diane Wiese-Bjornstal, Ph.D.  Shortly after, he and his family moved to Baton Rouge Louisiana to work at Louisiana State University.  He currently an independent consultant for sport performance enhancement and mental training while also teaching sport psychology as an adjunct instructor at LSU.

Overall, Jim has more than 20 years of competitive sport experience and over 12 years of performance enhancement / mental training experience.  Jim has worked with athletes of all ages, levels and nearly all sports.  Numerous ISPC athletes have met their goals winning high school, collegiate, and professional championships. Over the past 10 years Jim has provided coach education to more than 4600 coaches and parent education to more than 1800 parents.  He has trained more than 600 athletes and works with clients participating in collegiate sport at more than two dozen Division I Universities and numerous professional athletes in a variety of sports. 

Jim has also taught sport psychology, physical education and psychology courses at Louisiana State University, the University of Minnesota, Arizona State University, the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Minnesota State University at Mankato, and Concordia University St. Paul.
